Jasmine's story

Jasmine has a physical disability and is a wheelchair user. For nearly two years, she had been unable to access the upstairs of her own home or sleep in her own bedroom. Her stairlift application had already been approved - but it had stalled somewhere in the system, and for 18 months nothing moved.

Lost in the system

When Jasmine contacted Advocacy Matters, she felt she had been forgotten. Her housing association and occupational therapist hadn’t progressed her case, and she didn’t know how to push it forward on her own. Her advocate helped her resubmit her already-approved application and worked with her to follow it through – keeping up regular contact with the occupational therapist and housing association, and advising Jasmine to get her local MP involved. The combined pressure of consistent emails, phone calls, updates, and a visit from her MP to the OT department finally got things moving.

Jasmine today

After almost two years, Jasmine’s stairlift was fitted. She was able to access her bedroom and sleep in her own bed. This is what she wrote to her advocate afterwards:

“It has been a lengthy and difficult process, and I feel without your support and guidance it would still be ongoing. I really could not have done it without you. Everything you have done for me has been greatly appreciated. I have gained independence in my own home.”
