Sanjay's story
After an accident left him isolated at home, Sanjay was searching for a way back - not just into the community, but into a sense of purpose. In 2003, his social worker suggested Advocacy Matters, and he's been part of the organisation ever since.
From isolation to involvement
Sanjay had never volunteered before, and as a wheelchair user he wasn’t sure how he’d be received. But from the start, he found a place where people accepted him as he was. He brought administrative support to the team and, in return, found something he hadn’t expected – confidence, connection, and a renewed sense of identity.
“I was searching for my identity. I wanted to do something good, to contribute to society. Volunteering gave me a feeling of fulfilment rather than just looking after my own needs.”
What volunteering gave him
For Sanjay, the impact went well beyond the work itself. Volunteering gave him hope that life could still be fun. It showed him that disabled people can be accepted and valued in society – and it changed how he felt about himself.
“The work helped me with my self-worth. I’m not inferior and it made me confident in a group.”
